In this episode we discuss a topic of interest brought up by Kel: working for a publisher vs self-publishing! With Spike and Kel being experts in both areas respectively, there's a lot to talk about!
(We are skipping episode 43 due to editing problems, it will be posted at a later date)
In this heavily opinion-based episode the ladies discuss Love Triangles, and as usual with very opinionated subjects we emphasize: just because we don't like something doesn't mean its bad! And *any* trope or cliche can great with the right execution.
We're just mouthy old broads.
In this admittedly odd episode recorded back in March, the ladies talk about their experiences at one of their biggest and favorite shows of the year - Emerald City Comic Con! We tried to keep it professional, but we ended up complaining a lot... and talking way more about food than comics.
Interested in going to conventions to meet comic creators, peers and network with publishers? The ladies share their experiences socializing at conventions, with both advice and some calming words.
What is Worldbuilding? Well, we're prepared to talk about it tediously for an hour! Get ready for some pedantry and opinions.
The ladies discuss their inspirations and the fine line between being inspired and being derivative.
Pitches and Submissions! The ladies discuss how to submit/pitch, their experiences, and Spike is as humble as ever.
The ladies discuss changes with Patreon as it relates to comic artists, the introduction of Kickstarter's competing platform Drip. And maybe a Nintendo character's butthole? Sorry not sorry.
When we recorded this episode, Spike was in England, so we invited a guest on the show: Mildred Louis! Since all three of us make or plan to make magical girl comics, we decided to talk about that very thing.
You can find Mildred's comic here: https://www.agentsoftherealm.com/
In this episode the ladies asked their social media followers: What's your excuse? What is keeping you from taking those first baby steps towards making comics? While the title of the episode is cheeky, we fully understand there are a ton of very valid reasons people are hesitant to make comics, or decided to never try. So we're gonna talk about the answers we got! And maybe get a little political. And talk about old witches in the woods who hoard anime titties.
In this episode we discuss a trope/cliche and how we feel about it. This is a new series we're doing, with plans to touch on numerous tropes/cliches in future episodes.
Due to the nature of the subject, this is a VERY SPOILER-Y episode. Here's a (not comprehensive) list of stories we spoil:
- Harry Potter
- Magic Knight Rayearth
- Jupiter Ascending
- 2 Discworld stories
This episode may be a bit dry, but its very educational! The ladies discuss this summer's American Library Association conference and how is may or already has affected their careers as publishers.
Note: This episode was recorded way back in January, and it shows.
In this new episode we talk PACING comics... aaaaand other things, since we were terrible and had a hard time staying on track, lol.
Note: This episode has a special guest, Amanda's cat, who yelled in the background in a way that couldn't be edited out. She has a lot of important opinions about comics, y'all.
Today's episode is about doing comics Full-time vs Part-time, pros and cons of both, and our experiences. Plus we dunk on some dumb fallacies, and reveal ourselves to be the worst girl gang.
Production note: For the first 10 minutes, Spike sounds like she's in a tin can. This is a problem we've since fixed, but there was no way to up the quality this time. Sorry!
We're back! For real! In this episode we answer some listener mail and talk about, among other subjects, pitches, taxes, impostor syndrome, and a subject of seething, passionate disgust.
See you next week! Also be sure to see Amanda and Kel at Vancaf!
In this episode we loosen our ties and get comfy while we talk about taking care of yourself, at home and at conventions. Should you bathe from head to toe in lemon-scented antibacterial hand sanitizer? The jury is split.
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Today's episode is about making and selling merchandise, specifically with conventions in mind.
Mentioned in this episode:
Some behind-the-scenes for this episode: Spike was late to recording, so when we started, Amanda was high. That's why they are both fired. We had a good run!
... but for real, see y'all in 2016 with more episodes!
Come, friends, listen to us informally shoot the shit about scripting comics, featuring special guest host: Amanda's barely-audible but no-less-distracting cat, Meato.
In a special live-from-Kel's-living-room episode, we spoke with frequent collaborator and friend Rhiannon about the nitty gritty of PREPRESS. Scared about getting your comic print-ready? Don't worry, Rhi is here to help!

In this episode recorded around October, we discuss DISTRIBUTION, from shipping inventory out of your bedroom to getting a graphic novel into major bookstores.
In this week's episode we break down this "MY BRRAAANNDDDDD" thing we're always croaking about, what it means and how we apply it practically.
In this casual episode we talk about fatigue as a comicker, and how it's pretty much inevitable at some point. We discuss our lowest points, grumpy convention stories, and the highlights that make it worth it.
We're answering listener mail! Our rambling spans across commissions, Chinese New Year, Kickstarter fulfillment companies, our gross desks and how Spike tortures us with recipes.
Prepare to hear us gurgle-hiss the phrase "MY BRAND" multiple times like withered little comic witches as we discuss selling at conventions

Further listening: If you're interested in the perspective of organizing conventions, and a large publisher's convention experience, check out the episode of Inkstuds called "The Butcher, The Brothers and The Brandon."
Spike and Kel, both seasoned SDCC exhibitors, elaborate on their experiences to Amanda, who refuses to ever go.
